Chapter 9

The trio pulled up to the railroad tracks, pulling alongside the adjacent hospital’s parking garage and pushing further around other vehicles till they got to the large apartment complex by the water. They could go all the way up to the tracks from there.

“Dammit,” Ben said. Just as he thought they had a clear shot to the bridge, water was covering the far end of the parking lot, forcing him to look back at the parking garage. “Change of plans. We’re going to the garage.”

Ian and Kelly looked at each other, obviously not happy with the change.

“Hey, man, I understand you want to get this over with, but that garage probably isn’t going to be the safest place,” Ian informed, looking back at Kelly as she pulled her rifle closer to her chest.

The team was loaded with plenty of ammunition and guns, at least Ben thought so.

“I know we haven’t seen many zombies because of the rain, but if what you said is right, I doubt many of them hang around the water’s edge anyway. They must have moved on,” Ben noted, making perfect sense to himself.

“Or they’ve taken shelter,” Kelly said, grimacing. Again, Ian and Kelly looked at each other. They must’ve come to a decision as the two nodded at each other, sitting up straighter.

“I’m just going to pull up the first ramp to get a little distance between us and the ground. We’re not going all the way in,” Ben explained much to the approval of his companions.

He slowly maneuvered the truck around an abandoned vehicle. Its windows were smudged and looked as if they were covered with mold on the inside. He was sure there was a body in there.

The rain was still falling; however, at a lesser cadence than it had in the morning. Ben figured that it would be enough to cover up any noise they made as he slowly pushed the truck through the parking garage’s entrance. The yellow-and-black boom barrier installed to keep unwelcome guests out at one time snapped, shattering into a dozen pieces as the truck eased into the dark space. The road immediately veered upward toward the second floor. They would park at the top of the ramp and get out; no need to go further into the garage.

“All right, here’s the plan. I brought three backpacks, each with a radio. I can’t see the far end of the bridge due to the rain, but if what you’re saying is true, once we get to the other side, I’d like to have the option to drop these off. My main worry is the train bridge getting covered in water. We need to be in and out as quickly as possible,” Ben declared as he opened the door, letting the sounds of rain fill the truck.

“Kelly and I will go ahead and check out the Veterans Arena. That’s where the radio message was pointing to. I don’t think we’ll run into any issues, and on these bikes, it’ll probably
